Why Women Are Paid Less


    In the beginning of the World, human being need to work and busy with something for survive. First ones (people) were busy for hunting and gathering. Contaring the common knowledge, early year of beginning, women are busy with hunting and men have to look for children but everything change in time and know we have unbreakable ideas. Women have to look for children!

With Industrial Revolution, women startted to enter the business world very slowly with need to for handle work. They worked in textile industry or service industry. On the other hand, they worked in some real business world but just for work not building career. For example, they worked for secretarial place. In 1960's, found the women lawyer or doctor is very difficulty. In business world, especially job advertisements were made for men or they used discriminative language.

If we looked at past, there are many reasons for influence inequality income. These are have relation with cultural norms, regional norms, education system, feminine jobs groups, less payment problem in business and women have context of family or primary caregiver. Most of all have changed with time but only one thing didn't change. Women have context with family.

Not only in Turkey, also in many European country believed that women have to look for their children because they are primally caregivers. Because of these reason, they didn't work equal time with men. There is a something I guess, this inequality is not just for in women also for men because when we agree with that women have to look for children and they are primary caregiver, we agree with men have to earn many and brest financial load. In that case, two of them are in inequality concept.


When one women being a mum, we wait to her look for her children. When they being mom they have to do lots of thing. Think a one couple. Two of them are well educated and everything is same. They work same statues and they work approximately 16 hours but they take decision and have a baby. When they have a baby, mom has to work extra 9 hours. That reason mother mostly work part-time or work take for permission. When a women take her children, a man raise his success and carrier steps. Other than this, inequality is not about just being a woman; it is about being a mum.

Lets think about two women. One of them has a children and family but other one is not married and do not have any children.  Two of them has same job but mother one is being forced to working more flexible even part-time, normal one is working standard conditions and earn more money than mother one. That context women get less money than men also mother one's earn less than women. So that is not just inequality between women and men, also it is maternity punishment.

In 1980's, one article which is about given answering, "I got promotion, I want to look like professional, How I have to decorated my worktable?" show us that answers will change for your gender. If you are a man, you have to put your family or children's pictures on your desk. That means you look like a responsible dad and it is good for you. On the other hand, if you are a woman, you shouldn't put your family or children's pictures on your desk because that is shown you look like not focused your job.


Many developed countries, religions, societies, important people - most of them are men- claim that paid less and being mother is fate for women but I really disagree that claim and I think conditions not suitable for women. They do not give permission to women for to show themselves. They limit women for some rules, rituals, and stereotyped social concerns. There are lots of examples, which are show that when women are not limited they do their job very well. Also when they pressured from society they want to get their power and want to change something.

In Rwanda, Africa, women do not have any right. They cannot even opened bank account without men's permission. They cannot spoke in society but everything was changed in 1990's with war. 800 thousand people died in 3 months. Men numbers are insomuch few, women rate correspond 70 percent of society. That was destroyed social and cultural texture. Women have been involved to labor force. They have become soldier, wrecker, machinist and president. Now, Ruan's parliament includes women 61 percent of them. In business world rates show that 80 percent of them are women.


In 1970's, women protest against to inequality conditions in Iceland. They leaved their jobs, stores closed and the community necessarily changes their rules. Also in 2000's, government changes their law about permission for birth. Normally, women have permission after born their children because of being mum but after alteration, men have permission if they being dad for look their children. So they broke the norms.

Also in Turkey, men have permission for look their children. I think it is important for our society. They get that right and broke some norms though late but it is significant for destroyer to inequality conditions step by step. That permission provides men and women for work more equality conditions and remove men and women from identity of dad and men. Of course women have right for choose being mom and it is choice. İt is their right but if one women remove from their job or society because of being mother, it is not choice that context, it is serious problem for women and society.
